MCASA and UMBC Host Dr. Janine D’Anniballe’s Training on Neurobiology of Trauma

Dr. Janine D’Anniballe is a nationally-recognized expert and a licensed psychologist who specializes in the areas of neurobiology of trauma, vicarious trauma and treatment for survivors. She has been dedicated specifically to the prevention, treatment, and training of sexual assault issues for the past 18 years, spending 10 of them as the Executive Director of Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), the rape crisis center in Boulder, Colorado. The U.S. Department of Justice is among the organizations that look to her for expertise on issues of trauma. Maryland is thrilled to welcome her to speak on Friday, November 2, 2012 on what law enforcement and service providers need to know about how trauma affects a sexual assault survivor's brain. This training is co-sponsored by the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (with funding from the Maryland Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention) and University Health Services of University of Maryland Baltimore County. It will take place at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The exact location on the UMBC campus will be emailed to all registrants. The schedule of the day can be seen below. 8:30am-10:30am: Session 1 Why Survivors of Sexual Assault Act the Way They Do:  Understanding the Neurobiology of Trauma This interactive presentation on the topic of trauma and its psychobiological effects will begin with an exploration of the nature of traumatic events (such as sexual assault, domestic violence, and witnessing violence), and move to the difference between normal, situational, and traumatic stress. Also explored:
  • Brain structures and biochemistry
  • Dissociation, hypervigilance, and flashbacks
  • Various traditional and non-traditional approaches to treatment
10:45am-12:15pm: Session 2 The Neurobiology of Trauma:  Implications for Criminal Justice Professionals Law enforcement officers, prosecutors, attorneys, probation officers and other criminal justice professionals will gain an increased understanding of trauma and explore concrete strategies and tools for interviewing sexual assault survivors and working with them as their case proceeds through the criminal justice system. 1:15pm-3:15pm: Session 3 Trauma-Informed Care:  Enhancing Victim Advocacy Response Learn to enhance your advocacy skills by understanding and implementing trauma-informed care approaches with sexual assault survivors.
