The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) advocates for accessible compassionate care for survivors of sexual violence, provides guidance and training on preventing sexual assault, and works to hold offenders accountable. MCASA concentrates on public policy, education and prevention activities, and community outreach. The Sexual Assault Legal Institute (SALI), an MCASA program, offers direct legal services for survivors of sexual violence. SALI also provides technical assistance training for attorneys, rape crisis and recovery center staff and volunteers, and other professionals who work with survivors. Each year MCASA holds a Reception which honors those who have worked tirelessly on behalf of survivors of sexual violence in areas ranging from direct services to executive leadership. This year's reception will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Harry Browne's Restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland. This year's honorees are:  Kristin Jones, Esquire Vice President of External Affairs with the University of Maryland Medical System Former Chief of Staff to Speaker Michael E. Busch Joseph I Tivvis, Jr., Esquire Law Office of Joseph I Tivvis, Jr. Pro Bono Counsel with MCASA's Sexual Assault Legal Institute Laura London Advocate Last year’s legislative session included several significant victories for survivors of sexual assault. Included among those were a bill expanding the people eligible for protective orders to include those who have had a sexual relationship with the abuser/perpetrator within the past year, which will provide increased protection for those in dating relationships as well as for sexual assault survivors generally; and a bill addressing college sexual assault which will improve collaboration at the local level by requiring that colleges pursue formalized agreements with rape crisis centers, MCASA, or both. To purchase tickets for the reception, please visit this link. Ticket prices for the reception are $45 for MCASA members and $60 for non-members. Tickets for legislators are complimentary.
