Female genital mutilation/cutting, or FGM/C, is the removal or injury of the female external genitalia for nonmedical reasons. This can include cutting, removing, sewing, pricking, piercing, scraping, or burning parts of the genital area. FGM/C is illegal in Maryland. It is a form of sexual and gender-based violence. FGM/C can affect a survivor’s physical, mental, and sexual health; emotional well-being; and sense of safety. FGM/C is illegal in Maryland. Starting October 1, 2026, SB907/HB1389 - Female Genital Mutilation will take effect.
