Update: Judge orders Eastern Shore landlord to pay $2.5M for sexual assault of tenants

In July 2024, we shared that Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown filed a lawsuit against an Eastern Shore landlord and his company, for violating these laws. The lawsuit alleged a pattern of gender-based housing discrimination involving sexual harassment and demands to exchange sex for rent. Last week, the landlord was ordered to pay nearly $2.5 million for sexual assault and harassment of women who were current or prospective tenants. He was also ordered to stop working in the residential rental industry “in perpetuity.”

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said the judgment “puts predatory landlords on notice that we will hold them accountable.”

If you have experienced discrimination or sexual harassment by a landlord or related housing individual, there are resources available.
