April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), an annual occasion to revitalize our efforts to spotlight the needs of sexual assault survivors and promote the importance of prevention work. 2026 is a major milestone, with today marking the start of the 25th anniversary of the first official SAAM. As advocates, service providers, and survivors navigate these incredibly challenging times, SAAM creates a space for us to support one another and move forward together.
The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) will be promoting SAAM activities hosted by local Rape Crisis Centers and community organizations throughout the month, and looks forward to engaging with the public at many of these events. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) hosts SAAM each year. This year’s theme is 25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward, and we will be highlighting the important work done by movement leaders across generations, and amplifying the urgent call to action to expand prevention work across communities as we strive to end sexual violence in Maryland. Learn more at: nsvrc.org/saam.
Community members can stay up-to-date with all of MCASA’s online #SAAM activities on Facebook, X, Instagram, Threads, and Bluesky. We will also share details on upcoming SAAM events hosted by Maryland’s Rape Crisis Centers and other community organizations on our website.
