Prevention Corner: SAAM 2023

Apr 06th, 2023

Each year, SAAM provides space for those in sexual violence prevention and response to raise awareness of the importance of our work and highlight the needs of survivors and our communities at large. By sharing resources, strategies, and emphasizing the work that we do every day, we can engage community members, leaders, and the general public in our movement. There are many ways you can get involved with SAAM at MCASA and on the national level with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). We encourage you to find one way to share some SAAM information with your networks, peers, friends, and family this month to help us build support and end sexual violence in Maryland and beyond.

SAAM at MCASA

MCASA is launching a new campaign on our social media platforms this SAAM! We are asking advocates, service providers, preventionists, and educators in Maryland to share why they do this work and why this work is important to them. We will be sharing responses to the prompt ‘'I am raising awareness because....' throughout the month to highlight the work of dedicated folks in sexual violence prevention and response.

This SAAM MCASA is also hosting another MCASA on the Go podcast series. Our Spring Program Interns Hanah Ajamian (University of Maryland College Park) and Rhea Waghray (George Washington University) are leading the series. The episodes will discuss the following topics:

  • Self Care for Survivors and Advocates During SAAM
  • Non-Consensual Condom Removal and Prevention
  • Deep Fakes and Digital Sexual Violence
  • The Prison Rape Elimination Act - Protecting Incarcerated Individuals from Sexual Violence

New episodes will be released weekly on our MCASA on the Go Page, with the first episode launching today! You can also find us on YouTube and Spotify.

MCASA is available to provide technical assistance, offer training, and attend outreach and engagement events across the state during SAAM and year-round. To invite MCASA to provide training or attend your community event, fill out our request form here. We are also happy to share and promote community events happening across Maryland! Check out our SAAM Page for a list of upcoming events. If you would like us to promote your event, please send any graphics, links, or fliers to [email protected]

Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center hosts Sexual Assault Awareness Month each year. This year’s theme is Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity. This April's campaign calls on all individuals, communities, organizations, and institutions to change ourselves and the systems surrounding us to build racial equity and respect. To engage with this year’s campaign, visit NSVRC’s page to learn more. You can share their graphics on social media or bring their resources to a class discussion or book group with friends.
